Synopsis: Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet and safe life among books and history. However, the commanding general and tough-as-nails mother ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. However, death is only around the corner when you are smaller than everyone else and your body is weak. Dragons do not bond to "fragile" humans. They incinerate them. Since fewer dragons are willing to bond than cadets, most want to kill Violet to better their chances of bonding. The rest want to kill her because she is her mother's daughter. Specifically Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant. She needs every edge her wits can give her to see the next sunrise. Yet every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.
Review: This book is everything I want from a fantasy novel. Suspense, dragons, fighting, romance, and multiple near-death experiences exist. The author makes the novel very easy to read. There is not much world-building, so you are thrown in not knowing how the world works. It can be confusing at first but it makes the suspense greater because you do not know what is going on. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading this book. Everything is very fast-paced so there is never a dull moment. I loved all the characters. Even the characters I was not supposed to like, I still enjoyed them. The relationships between all of them felt real as though I was part of the book. The novel is nearly 500 pages, yet it still does not feel like enough. This is the first book in a five-book series coming out and I am so excited to read the rest.
